Now here's a curiosity! A Swiss gospel choir singing in English! One Step take a stroll through gospel music's greatest hits and deliver with a bit of bounce! There's actually something rather comforting about hearing these familiar songs delivered in simple straightforward fashion. There's a slightly jazz-tinged rendition of "This Joy" with Samuel Jonckheere taking lead which leaps with life. Of course no selection would be complete without "Oh Happy Day" (this time featuring the excellent Lidja Roos). Elsewhere "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho", Andrae Crouch's "Soon And Very Soon" and the classic "You Light Up My Life" (again featuring the very talented Roos) are all served up in competent, if not earth shattering style. My favourite? Probably the call and response "John The Revelator" with Sandra Previtall taking lead duties. As an introduction to gospel for those unfamiliar with the genre, this works well, otherwise for long term fans of gospel familiarity breeds contempt. There isn't enough here that is original to make an impression.
