Reviewed by Ian Hayter According to the CD cover, this is “Worship music that provides a nurturing environment for baby’s mind and spirit” and it’s suitable for little ones aged 1-36 months. I’m afraid the verdict on its effect on the minds and spirits of babies will have to be left to those more conversant with the theories of Piaget and Fowler than I am, but it does seem a rather strange concept. Admittedly, there is a very well produced tie-in video/DVD which provides some appropriately toddler-aimed images to go with the music, but on its own this album seems simply to be a selection of familiar worship songs with tinkly accompaniment and a choir of small children backing the lead vocalists. The songs are not specifically child-centred but are such standards as ‘Shine, Jesus, Shine’, ‘I Could Sing Of Your Love For Ever’ and Rich Mullins’ ubiquitous ‘Awesome God’. I suppose it’s better to have this playing in the background while baby’s playing on the carpet than some of the music currently floating around the airwaves, and it must connect with the bairns’ brains at a subliminal level, but I reckon it might be of most use as a relaxing worship album for frazzled parents. It’s worth a listen, and if you’re of the “everything I provide for baby has got to be Christian” school of thought, then it’s obviously a must.

Worship music and fun interactive video that provides a nurturning environment for baby's spirit and mind.
'Praises and Smiles' combines popular praise and worship songs with images of children enjoying God's creation, colorful animation and real world objects. This DVD will actively engage your baby's spirit and mind, stimulating early learning in the areas of tactile, cognitive, social, emotional and most importantly spiritual development. Three different audio tracks allow you to listen to each song with a 'mummy' lead vocalist, child vocalist or instrumental only |
