Guitarist Roy Johnson is a widely respected session-man on Britain's black gospel scene, having played with Dorothy Allen, The Majestic Singers and in the Clark Sisters' backing group on British visits. This album contains instrumental versions of songs taken from 'The Church Hymnal'. Although pleasant enough, this kind of material leaves me cold I'm afraid - dangerously close to being Christian muzak for sanctified supermarkets. That said, there may be many out there who find instrumental versions of their favourite hymns soothing, even uplifting background music. It that's the case, this is for you, Roy's playing is competent throughout, and some of the arrangements are quite adventurous. If this is your bag, now's your chance to support your local session man.
