London's Spirit Led Worshipers (SLW) are a vibrant and versatile gospel group consisting of singers, songwriters and instrumentalists. 'God Alone' is their debut three song (plus instrumental track) EP that showcases their versatility as musicians as well as their heart for worship. They describe their sound as a blend of gospel influenced by various genres such as jazz, soul, rock and afro beats. They remind me of the likes of Fred Hammond and the third track in particular has shades of Kirk Franklin. The EP kicks off with "Thank You" which has a funky bass riff and some outstanding lead vocals. The backing vocals are slightly out of tune at times but the interest and variety of their musicality makes up for it. One's interest is maintained until the lyrics slip into an overly repetitive ending which is redeemed a little by some smoking hot saxophone. "Yahweh (God Alone)" moves into a more reflective and gentle mood. There are atmospheric effects in abundance but are not overdone, producing a beautiful background for this more tender and intimate song. "You Are" ramps up the tempo for the finish and is a toe-tapping track that is fun and uplifting. However the vocal effect used soon becomes a distraction.
