In the early '80s, this was probably the most radical ministry music for children available anywhere. The concept was American and originally put together by Tom Brooks who went on to be the musical director for dozens of Integrity Music worship albums. This British version of the musical, released in 1981 by Kingsway Music, was re-recorded in England using the original musical backing tracks but with new British dialogue and child singers and actors as well as a supporting cast of singers which include Ishmael playing Preacher Pigeon and Mark Williamson playing a character called Hairy. Obviously 30 years on, the music has dated somewhat but the songs themselves are powerful teaching tools for children to learn about God and life including teaching them about faith ("Never Say Never") obeying their parents ("I Want What God Wants") and rock'n'roll isn't bad in itself ("The Spirit Behind The Music"). Plus, of course, there's the gospel message in there. One highlight is Mark Williamson singing "I Found Love" after his character gets saved. The Supergang did some performances of this musical at the time of release and who knows, it may still have legs if an enterprising church wanted to revive it.
