Charly have issued a budget-price series of 'Charly Gospel Greats', initially nine CDs and a sampler. These are the legendary vocal groups that nourished the roots of some great traditional gospel sounds that many vocal ensembles both sacred and secular owe an immense debt to. The Highway QC's were notable for the great singers who passed through their ranks en route to higher or lower things, depending how you look at it. Sam Cooke of course, also Johnnie Taylor and he with the odd name, Lou Rawls. 20 tracks here of the group's smooth, joyous, tight harmonies, split between acappella and accompanied. Quite a comparatively controlled sound, graceful and well-seasoned. Very welcome re-issue series at an attractive price.
