As its title suggests, this six-track EP from Oxford-based singer/songwriter and producer Tom Read - who sometimes goes under the stage name Chariots - references some of the tougher aspects of the faith journey. For instance, the opener "Masks" tells of feeling jaded and the need for the singer to show his real face when communicating with God whilst the stripped back and abstract "Dead Things To Life" - a recent UK Christian Chart number one single - cautiously pays tribute to God's redeeming love which persists despite our failings. Set to an unfussy EDM backdrop, Read keeps his vocal performance suitably low key to match the theme of the EP although an impressive foray into falsetto in the memorable "In The Ordinary" proves that he is able to soar when required. Elsewhere, the still downbeat but ultimately stirring "The Valley" has something of an anthemic feel to it before an auto-tuned voice only reprise of "Masks" closes this deeply spiritual and artistically satisfying offering in style.
