South African music pioneer Dave Ornellas dies

SOUTH AFRICAN pastor, conference speaker and musician Dave Ornellas died on 8th September 2010. After years of working in South Africa's mainstream rock industry with the band Hawk (renamed JoBurg Hawk for the European market) drug abuse took its toll. Ornellas made a life-changing decision for Christ in January 1976. With Christ bringing restoration to his marriage Ornellas turned his musical gift to gospel music and subsequently recorded independent albums 'Masters And Kings', 'Shiloh', (with his family) 'With Love' and 'Plugged In'. For many years he was senior pastor of a church in Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town. He ministered with his family at Cross Rhythms Festival 1995 and his son, Daniel, is a well known musician having played in the bands Naked Lyric and Tree63. CR

I met Dave at Rhema in Randburg while at RBTC. I would really like to get a copy of the CD Shiloh. Can anyone help? We'll use it here in PNG for ministry.

Wow. So sad to only learn of his passing on this morning - six years later. The first time I heard him sing was with the Rhema Church Worship team and I fell in love with him. Wonderful musician!

I was very saddened to read of Dave's passing. He was a true musician and inspiration. I had the privilege of playing with him and his son at a Pinelands High School Gospel crusade, in Cape Tow about 1998.
it was truly inspirational!
He lives on in his music.

Wow! I was a little girl, but I remember very well Dave as a this amazing Rock singer with a raspy voice. I had never heard that kind of singing in church, at that stage in my life I only associated it with radio and non-gospel singers. The difference between him and the worldly singers is what I understand now as grace, as the love of God and love for God. I saw and heard him when he visited a local church in Harare, maybe early 80s or 90s. But two days ago I woke up from a dream singing a song that I didn't know it's lyrics quite well. The words that kept coming to me are: "...conquerers, masters and kings...". Those words remained in my little head, all those years back. I typed the words in the youtube slot and voila! I found the song. Thanks for putting up the songs, such a blessing.

About where to find Hawk's music, maybe u could try his daughter's site at beshara.co.za. In addition, Benji Mudie (of 702 juke-box fame--from 10pm on a Saturday night), an ol' friend of Dave Ornellas, may also be able to assist u.

Saw the band Hawk perform at a resort early 70's. Years later in 1976/77, not exactly sure of the date, a group had a "show at our local church in Sasolburg. When I heard what the surname was, I immediately thought of the band Hawk, but could not remember the face all that well. He was with his wife, gave his testimony and then I knew for sure. Although he did not mention the band Hawk by name, I knew it had to be him. After a wonderful service, the congregation had tea in the hall and I approached him and introduced myself as well as the fact that I was at one of his earlier performances as Hawk. He was really so surprised, could not believe I recognised him. What a shock when I heard of him passing away. He was a wonderful servant of God and is sadly missed.
