Where does worship become performance, and vice versa? An interesting question, but one we don’t have the space to answer here. But listen to this CD, which comes out of the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Brownsville Assembly of God Church in Pensacola, and you’ll understand why I ask it. Lindell Cooley’s leading of worship here is a bravura performance – helped, of course by the anointed skill of a host of uncredited musicians – and melds together blues, gospel and rock in a wonderful synthesis of true worship. It’s beautifully arranged, but without the production-line slickness (and soul-lessness) of many other “live worship” albums, and certainly touched my heart. Check out “Pour Out My Heart”, with its wonderful guitar intro and soulful Hammond organ chords, and the more meditative “Holy Love”. There are some great sound on this album, and whether its performance or worship you’re after you won’t be disappointed (and you’ll get the other one as a bonus!)
