Christ Tabernacle is the first church to come out of the famed Brooklyn Tabernacle. heir's is undoubtedly a thrilling sound live but captured on CD their music often seems both overtheatric and stilted. This album, released in 2003, includes amongst its guests Calvin Hunt (you read about him in CR81) and he indeed brings some soul power to the proceedings on the opener "Oh That People Everywhere". But even he flounders on a version of "Revive", a rendition that retains little of the cathartic joy of Anointed's original. Several of the songs here were written by the hugely talented Geron Davis, the writer of Donnie McClurkin's stone classic "We Fall Down", but there's nothing of that standard here. All in all, an album that loyal followers of this ensemble might enjoy but one unlikely to make many new ones.
