One of the surprise inclusions at this year's Big Church Day Out was this US-based husband and wife duo and judging from the dazzling quality of 'Anchors Aweigh' they'll be invited back another year. Drakeford Lanier had previously used his first name for a singer/songwriter album but now the addition of his British-born wife Lucy-Jayne has brought his Americana/folk-tinged music into full focus and the songs they write and sing together deserve the widest possible exposure. I love their switched leads on "Words Of Solomon" with its haunting hook "with the wellspring of life". I love the sweeping cellos which add rich atmosphere to their slower songs and the beautifully picked guitar on "Driftwood". And I love the song that expresses the richness of living with the indwelling Spirit ("Nothing Like") and the staccato tongue twisting lines which convey with the art of skilled lyricists a life which has purpose. In an age of disposable pop and shallow consumerism this musical reminder of the richness of life in Christ is hugely appreciated.
