Hearing the meatily funky “Unconditional” from the long-deleted ‘Deliverance’ album reminds this reviewer how groundbreaking it all seemed in 1993 when Fred quit Commissioned to break out on his own. Since then of course Fred has become a premier league gospel star and one with considerable stylistic armoury, able to move from live praise and worship to melodramatic inspirational ballads. But for me the maestro woks best when he’s giving his funkster’s thumb a workout as well as his amazing soulful chops. Lots of great tracks, check out Fred’s superlative version of Sam Cooke’s “Jesus Be A Fence Around Me” or the Founder’s Mix of “Glory To Glory To Glory”. Contemporary gospel at its finest.

For avid gospel music collectors, Verity launches a new series of hit compilations called 'Hooked On the Hits.' And who better to launch it with than one of gospel's biggest hitmakers? The title says it all. This is Fred's first ever Greatest Hits album, so if you're new to his music, this should be the ideal introduction. Or you've burnt a hole in your other Fred Hammond CDs through repeated playing, this should do as a replacement. Or maybe you want a Fred Hammond CD for the car as well as the house; whatever the reason, this is a must-buy.
