The Grimethorpe Colliery Band has gone places not often associated with brass bands. Firstly, they became hugely popular after providing the soundtrack recording to the '90s hit film, Brassed Off. Secondly, they have become the first of their kind to be resident in the Royal College Of Music. Thirdly, and more relevant to this album, they have recorded credible brass versions of modern worship songs such as Matt Redman's "When The Music Fades". Indeed, Grimethorpe's rendition here makes the Redman anthem sound like it was originally written to be played by such a band, and as such adds extra to a song already blessed with much emotion. The same can be said for "Light Of The World (Here I Am To Worship)", written by Tim Hughes. These sit alongside the traditional (and maybe more expected hymns) such as "There Is A Redeemer" and "Jerusalem". The album offers both the expected and surprising and is therefore recommended not simply to brass band aficionados, but also to more adventurous spirits looking for a new take on "contemporary" worship.
