Christian comedy is seemingly frowned upon in the UK but in the US it is a big deal, and Bananas is pretty close to the top of the tree when it comes to family entertainment, being as it is syndicated to a number of Christian TV channels. With this programme those who "get" America and American culture will love it, while those who don't might be a little mystified by some of the references. Everyone though will be able to relate to Allen's riffs on growing-up, teenagers and keeping the wife happy, even if the car references and some of the regional jokes might go a bit over the head. I laughed out loud all the way through this hour long set, right up to the point 40 minutes in where Jeff seamlessly moves into a serious testimony which totally avoids being awkward or cheesy. Jeff's candid story of the transformation God wrought in him and his wife is powerful and heartfelt. And then, just as seamlessly, he closes off with more great laughs. This totally works for me and it would be well worth checking out some of the other guest comedians on the show's website. Proof here that you can be funny and clean.
