Back in 2006 Welsh singer/songwriter Julia was gaining a reputation for herself on the clubland scene. She even enjoyed a Cross Rhythms turntable hit with the title track of her EP 'These Days'. But then, presumably, marriage and kids slowed down the momentum so it was with some pleasure that we noted this 2012 album release which we are finally getting around to reviewing. Julia's lyrics are cryptic, "Get Up, Get Out" is a warning to certain people - "you know who you are"; she sings, "It's OK to cry, just get through the next day" on "Enigma" before assuring her song's subject "There's always a break in the storm"; while on "The Garden" the song comes almost to a stop as she asks, "Can you hear the rain falling?" Julia's skilfully picked acoustic guitar deftly support the delightful cadences of her voice - here harsh and bluesy, there sweet and delicate - while percussion when needed is given with folktronica empathy. This singing mum is clearly a big talent.
