One does not need to listen to many bars of the opening "Stabat Mater" before recognising that we are in Eastern Europe, with a deep bass drone from the a cappella choir. But this is not quite the Orthodox chant that admirers of John Taverner enjoy. This has a colder, Northern feel to it (think of Penderecki's fellow-Pole, Henryk Gorecki or the Latvian Arvo Part). As a budget re-issue of a 1993 recording this is a very useful introduction to a deeply spiritual composer. Those who appreciate the works of Gorecki, Part or Taverner should investigate Penderecki.
