Mark Allen Felton is a saxophonist, songwriter and producer from Chicago, now based in Los Angeles, who started his musical odyssey at the age of 11. He cites his musical influences as Grover Washington, Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire, which is a pretty eclectic mix, and he's also known as Panther for no apparent reason, but I digress. The publicity for this, his third album, talks about how he's attacking the boundaries of gospel jazz, and whilst I'm not sure exactly what that means, I can say that when he's struttin' his stuff with his chosen instrument, be it soprano, alto or tenor, it's definitely an engaging listening experience. The Jonathan Grear Singers are present to give some bite to proceedings, and both jazz and gospel buffs should find plenty to enjoy. The only drawback is that Mark is no singer but when he reaches for those saxes it's truly a blessing.
