Nothing in his previous album output had quite prepared me for this. I'd always considered him a good rock gospeller who could on occasions pen a great worship chorus ("Our God Is An Awesome God"). But this album has a poetic maturity which surely singles it out as one of the best albums of the year. This album actually straddles 'roots' and 'contemporary' categories. There are plenty of pop hooks and layers of Jerry McPherson guitar. But there are also hammered dulcimars, some wonderful mandolin from Tom Hem by and even bagpipes on the intro to a lovely worship chorus "Step By Step" based on Psalm 62. It's sung first by a boy soprano before Rich takes up its plaintive refrain. Musically my favourite track is the acoustically propelled "Where You Are" while the man's lyrics dig deep and then some. Do investigate this album, it's an absolute gem.
