This must be a quite unusual disc, since it features three works by Alessandro Scarlatti (died 1725), a work by a pupil of his, J A Hasse (died 1783) and a work by his son Domenico Scarlatti (died 1757) who was famous for composing keyboard sonatas as well as religious works. Nothing like keeping it in the family. The presence of soloists James Bowman (countertenor) and Deborah York (soprano) accompanied by the wonderful King's Consort should be enough recommendation for anyone to buy this album! The highlight of this disc is definitely Domenico Scarlatti's "Salve Regina", a piece which sets emotive religious texts to tuneful melodies mixing religious devotion with occasional hints of opera. As one expects with the King's Consort, performances are nothing short of near-perfect and the engineering, tone and acoustics of this recording are truly magnificent. Highly recommended.
