Your beloved music journal has placed this in rock because one or two cuts more or less fit that category with one, “The Anti-Semitic Reporting Of Conflict In The Middle East”, a screaming vortex of rock guitars and free form percussion in search of a tune. But other tracks here defy any classification, “Selah” for instance, a seemingly random selection of samples (a Rastafarian ranting about Revelation, a brass band winding down a fragment of harpsichord, a heart beat and more), or “Lights Out”, a piece of whispered poetry, or a denouncement of theological error, “A Different Gospel”. Even with more mundane approaches to their art, the voice and guitar on “When Your Boat Comes In”, there’s bizarre percussion which sounds like someone hitting the mic. I’m not certain what P Jennings and his fellow avant guardists are always seeking to achieve, but ‘Escape The Establishment Club’’s sheer individuality takes it beyond any other CD out there.
