If, like me, you’ve been a Cross Rhythms reader from its birth back in 1990, then you’ll remember an excellent roots/Celtic band from Cheltenham named Eden Burning, who did all their recordings under the capable direction of David Pickering Pick. David also produced this four track EP from three ladies based at Evesham Elim Church, Worcestershire, and it’s so average, it gives middle of the road music a bad name. Track one "Bring Me The Children", benefits from a kiddies’ choir, with all the problems that entails; suffice it to say, the song isn’t a Grammy winner to start with, and the kids don’t improve it. The girls’ voices don’t blend at all well on track two, "Souls To Love And Cherish", in fact, someone sounds seriously off-key; track three, "Love Song With A Difference", is a jog-along ditty with pretty ordinary lyrics, and again the vocal quality is not good, the chorus especially has some harsh, shrill harmonies; and track four, "I Gotta Home In Gloryland" (aka "Do Lord"), is routine acapella with either hand claps or finger snaps. I’ve no doubt about the enthusiasm and commitment of these dear ladies, but I fail to see the point of this CD. There’s so much high quality Christian music available these days, discerning punters have an embarrassment of riches to choose from, and I can’t see any chance of this getting airplay on any radio station, sacred or secular. Very disappointing.
