Tony Cummings spoke to Kristian Stanfill of the Atlanta-based modern worship trio, PASSION

Tony: It's a strange job being a professional worshipper. How do you maintain the zeal?

Kristian: It is. It started for me in a private space. When I was 12, 13 years old in my bedroom, there was no YouTube, no Twitter: it was just me and Jesus. That's where the heart of worship formed in my life. We have to fight to maintain that sense of wonder, that innocent affection for Jesus. That's how, I think, you maintain that. That's not to say that it's always easy. There are days I wish I could go back to being 13 in my bedroom with my guitar, because it was so simple then. But I think that's where the real songs of worship come from, where the real moments get formed. Whatever's happening privately ends up happening publically. We're in each other's lives and helping each other along in all of that.

Tony: How does the style of Passion's music evolve?

Kristian: I don't know if it's intentional, but I will say that when Chris handed the baton to me and Brett and Melodie and our band, we've been trying to figure out, 'How do we express these songs?' Our group has really come together in the past couple of years. I think what you're hearing is the uniqueness of our band. For my money, I don't think there's a better worship band than our band. They're not just great musicians, they have amazing hearts for God. They want every sound they make to be the very best it can possibly be. Every section of a song, every hook - they fight and they fight and they fight, they refine and they refine and they refine, until it's the very best it can be. They're passionate about what they do, they take it seriously. You're hearing the sound of a band coming into their own. But we're also listening to everything happening in the world. We're listening to other songs, other worship music that's coming out. We're inspired by that, but we also want to keep pressing further and break new ground. CR

Hi Trina! I agree with you completely! I am also disabled by chronic pain & Arthritis. I do the very same thing by starting my day with singing worship music to God via YouTube! It really places me in the presence of God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit! Then I go on to my time of Bible Study. It just starts my day off right with my focus and praise on Jesus & with that I know I can handle anything that comes, with His help! Reach out to me if you’d like.... I’m on FB as Debbie Ahlberg Keeler & email is bagitup4you@hotmail.com. Praying for you today! In Christ’s love, Debbie
