Bach, The Sixteen Choir And Orchestra, Harry Christophers - The Six Motets

Reviewed by Dave Massey
The powerful counterpoint and harmonic structure of Bach meet the expensive and glorious medium of the motet in this work to produce a great, riveting listen. The first work on the disc is not the earliest of the six Bach motets, but it is an excellent choice for the first track, "Komm, Jesu, Komm!" is a setting of John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth..." etc and leads beautifully into "Lobet Den Herrn Alle Heiden" (Psalm 117) with its vigorous counterpoint and contrasted triple-time Alleluiah. The sixteen provide a gentle interpretation that makes for pleasant listening but lacks some of the breadth that a full-size choir bring to church music - in some ways it feels like playing an acoustic set to a Wembly audience might, definitely understated.
