Reviewed by Dawne B Stewart Under the leadership of gospel veteran Rev James Moore, the Colorado Mass Voice Choir will certainly get you swinging. Produced by Rev James Moore, this is an impressive debut release on Benson. An array of special guest lead vocals (Howard Hewett - yes, the onetime R&B star - and Dr Bobby Jones), an all-star band (such as Rudolph Stansfield, MD for Aretha Franklin, and Jonathan Duboise, guitarist for Harry Connick Jr), plus a contemporary high energy sound, makes this album indisputably way above other traditional mass choir recordings. However, if you're familiar with the genre you'll know what I'm talking about when I say they stretch the "soprano, alto, bass thing" a little bit too far. Still, there's a seriously groovy bassline on "I'm Going Away" while my personal pick of the crop is the smooth tones of lead vocalist Howard Hewett on "He Will Fight Your Battles". Other tracks to look out for include intro track "Stir Up The Gift", the title track and "Get Excited". An album well produced with good lead and choral vocals but it's the accompanying musicians who most consistently catch the ear.
