Chapman's 'The Light Inside' established him as a premier league artist after he'd toiled long and hard for other artists and been lost in the rather delightful shadow of wife Amy Grant. Building on that success, 'Shelter' sees Chapman in the studio with his touring band and producer Michael Omartian. Opening with his spine-tingling acapella version of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", Chapman launches into his finest selection of songs to date, closing with the slide guitar filled gospel belter "Gospel Train" (a highlight of his live set). Big voice, big production and big songs, Chapman's honesty and integrity shine through whether he's being Mr Strident on the rockier stuff or Mr Sensitive on the ballads. "Man After Your Own Heart" stopped me in my tracks as Chapman confesses his failings in this prayer but still affirms his desire after God, a beautiful moment. Equally tender, "One From Two" describes how God takes hold of romantic love and makes it even stronger when it's given to him. Appropriately enough, Amy joins Gary on this poignant tune which is destined to become a classic! On the bagpipe tinged (!) "Don't Be A Stranger", Gary sings, "If you are listening with more than just your ears/You'll know there's more to hear and that's true of this album. Solid!

I have this wonderful cd by Gary; great ccm songwriter! I had heard the duet with Amy Grant on ccm airwaves, "One of Two"; luved it! Great job on Mylon Lefevre's 1970 song "Gospel Ship"; in fact Gary sang this at the Dove Awards in 1997: I have it on vhs tape. "Man After YOUR Own Heart" we heard the year prior on "My Utmost for His Highest"; nice to see it included here: great songwriting here! wtg Gary! I really like "Soldiers of the Soul" & "Written in the Scars" hats off to a great songwriter!
GOD Bless! -Don
