This is an in-store reissue of releases from 1968 and 1972 of the King's College Choir under the great David Willcocks, the mentor of John Rutter. The mainstay of the disc is "Cantata 147" which contains the famous "Jesu. Joy Of Man's Desiring", probably familiar to most Cross Rhythms readers through wedding where a semi-competent organist tries their very best to murder one of the greatest tunes Bach ever came up with. Here it is recorded in its full orchestral and choral 30 minute glory and it's accompanied by two other Cantatas - this time for choir only - and a selection of chorales and chorale preludes (played on the organ). While the performances are competent and the sound quality very good considering these pieces were recorded over 25 years ago, one is left with the feeling that something is missing: the performances do not sparkle. The lights arc on perhaps, but is there anyone at home? Not the most exciting of records you might hope to find.
