Mr Roberts and the lads and lasses of Trinity wade in here with a double LP's worth of decent enough black gospel (not that it's ever indecent). This is a ten-year old ensemble of Chicago warblers about 50 strong, so somewhere between the "massed mega-choir" sound and that of the smaller vocal group style. Their main claim to date seems to be to have provided backing vocals on an Albertina Walker album but 'I Want To Go Back" should do them no harm at all as they produce the goods quite acceptably. The live concert is recorded with a commendably sharp clarity; the choir's singing is tight, controlled and expressive. "Soulful's" the word, I guess. They can turn on the power without boiling over and the excitement communicated throughout is authentic rather than whipped-up by an overwrought firework display. Some of the songs are performed in a style quite reminiscent of early Edwin Hawkins Singers, with cascading voices, other tracks are laid back and worshipful, with smooth soloists. Over four sides, interest starts to wane as the material becomes somewhat repetitious and hackneyed but in general a rather nice set of black gospel classier and more thoughtful than most.
