In an age when 'Christmas music' often means sentimental tributes to family or banal ditties about a red-coated gift-giver this multi-talented husband and wife duo put the focus back to where it should be - the staggering tale of the birth of a baby who was God incarnate. The Camerons here brilliantly integrate the sounds of Irish folk music with pop and classical musical elements to produce soundscapes which are at times transcendentally beautiful and at times gloriously joyful (like on Julie's fiddle solo on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"). Also, the setting of Charles Wesley's and George Whitefiled's classic "Hark The Herald Angels" lyrics to Iain MacLachlan's haunting Scottish pipe lament produces something truly timeless. There are some unexpected twists and turns in the arrangements - for instance, a full-on rock guitar solo by Dave Bainbridge in the middle of the "Dance Of The Shepherds/Joy To The World" medley. Plus, the occasional vocals from Julie surrounded by all this stunning instrumental dexterity are never less than arresting. Do investigate 'Celtish Christmas Volume Two'. If there's ever been a better Christmas album, I've not heard it.
