Here we have 28 tracks from the years 1963-1965 from the band first formed in 1939! "Precious Lord" begins with wonderful vocals and harmonies and, yes, an anointing which made the hairs on my arms stand up. "What He's Done For Me" is repetitive, rhythmic, roaring Pentecostal gospel soul! There are also the spiritual ballads, of course, all infused with heartfelt passion. These recordings made for Vee Jay Records were made after they peaked with their 'hard' quartet style in the '50s and before they were rediscovered for a white audience in the '90s so don't display Clarence Fountain and co at their best but still have some fiery moments. If you want to know the roots of soul and blues and are a fan of the old quartets, then this is an album well worth checking out.
