From the Potteries, Pete Shirley presents a low budget four track CD featuring him strumming and singing but the results don't fill me with great joy. The muggy recording doesn't really help and although Pete is a fine guitarist, he is not blessed with a brilliant voice so this begins to sound a little monotonous after a while. Certainly this has noble intent and the songs are focused on his Saviour but I'm left thinking that this is a CD for close friends, family and church.

Pete - Old Man of Mow and other fantastic songs reverberate in my head from your days at Macclesfield! You have a rich and expressive voice and Mr. Rimmer must have had wax in his ears!!!!

I simply cannot let the comment about Pete Shirley's voice go unchallenged. From a "muggy" 4 tracks Mike Rimmer concludes that Pete is not blessed with a brilliant voice. I first saw Pete Shirley 13 years ago at The Leek Folk Festival and have seen him play some 20-30 times since. I have his two folk albums and many recordings of him singing at live events. More importantly I have in my head memories of some wonderful riveting performances of his own powerful songs. Pete Shirley has one of the most memorable and original voices ever to have graced the Potteries Folk Scene.
