After the success of Truro Cathedral Choir's previous recording of Philip Stopford's music 'Do Not Be Afraid' it is good to hear the follow-up, again on Regent Records and this time featuring moving and uplifting anthems, motets and music for Christmas from this popular and talented composer. Performed by Truro Cathedral Choir with full orchestral accompaniment provided by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, it was directed by Christopher Gray. In the past Stopford has composed for choir and organ so to step up a level to an orchestra of international repute must have been daunting. However everything comes together. Philip Stopford has emerged as a popular and prolific writer of new choral music and is in wide demand on both sides of the Atlantic. His beautifully-crafted music combines uplifting texts with memorable melodies and glorious harmonies. They remind us of folk songs in sounding familiar, even if you have not heard them before and, judging from this excellent recording in Truro Cathedral, the singers clearly enjoy what they are singing. Like John Rutter, Stopford can bring new life to a familiar text - this collection includes "Ubi Caritas", "Ave Maria" and "There Is No Rose" to name three. Also he can freshen up a familiar tune in a new arrangement, as shown here with "We Three Kings". Choirs will enjoy singing the music of Philip Stopford, audiences enjoy hearing it and worshippers should find much of it to be a blessing. What's not to like?
