The Staples are currently hip again, with Pop Staples' recent release gaining much praise, including within the pages of this publication. Having heard his release I have to say I was disappointed - anyone who liked 'Peace To The Neighborhood', which was for the most part as smooth as Robert Cray in velvet, would probably be blown away by the gutsy sound of this compilation. The shimmering guitar which was their trademark is omnipresent here, although it only appeared on a couple of tracks on 'Peace...'. Here Pops' understated sound is complemented perfectly by the others' melancholy harmonies and Mavis Staples' growlingly soulful lead vocals. Tracks like "This Train Is Bound For Glory" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" are superlative and "What You Gonna Do?" shows why Ry Cooder copied their sound for the 'Crossroads' movies soundtrack not to mention where he got the inspiration for much else of his soundtrack work - "Southern Comfort" anyone? Also deserving a mention is their semi-acappella rendition of the "Lord's Prayer" which will truly make the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention. This album is a great selection from one of gospel's greatest and most original groups and an absolute must for anyone interested in gospel or blues music.
