It might be just me, but I don't think spirituals sound their best or most effective when sung by an English chamber choir. Yes, I have heard of Tippett's Child Of Our Time but used there they are in a different context. Having said that, the Vasari Singers are outstanding, and here, directed by Jeremy Backhouse and accompanied by Christopher Norton on the piano, they give tasteful arrangements of some well known and less well known spirituals including "Swing Low Sweet chariot", "Were You There?" and "Go Down Moses."

Product Description
Spirituals originated among slaves in the United States.

They were often forbidden to speak in their own language and they expressed themselves in religious ways using African melodies and rhythms. Combined with the European hymn styles that they were exposed to, religious songs developed that had strong emotions, rich harmonies and words centering on life’s struggles and the overcoming of those struggles through hopes for the next life.

This album contains new arrangements of some of the best-loved Spirituals including Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen, Were You There, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and My Lord What A Morning. Featuring beautiful solo voices as well as rich harmonies, these timeless and heartfelt songs never fail to move the listener.
