Cinematography:

Winner: Life Of Pi - Claudio Miranda

My Choice: Skyfall - Roger Deakins. Life of Pi looked tremendous but I loved the visual journey taken in Skyfall, not to mention the fact that Deakins should have won umpteen times already.

Best Documentary Feature:

Winner: Searching For Sugar Man

My Choice: The Imposter (not nominated). Another disgrace. It seems the Academy is making a career out of flagrantly ignoring what is obviously the best documentary of the year at the nomination stages. They pulled a similar piece of idiocy last year when Senna was outrageously omitted from the shortlist.

Best Film Editing:

Winner: Argo - William Goldenberg

My Choice: Argo is, on balance, a good win. I particularly appreciated the deliberate scratches at the start of the film that made me think I was watching 35mm instead of a digital projection. I miss 35mm.

Best Foreign Language Film:

Winner: Amour - Austria

My Choice: A Royal Affair (Denmark). As expected, Oscar went for misery over magnificence. Amour is a textbook example of a film only a critic could love. A Royal Affair on the other hand is passionate, gripping, thought-provoking and moving.
