Andy Gilbert is a singer and songwriter from Buckinghamshire, and by the sounds of things has several talented musician friends. The album is produced by Phil Goss (from the band As If.) who seems to have done a reasonable job, but it still sounds like a budget release when played back to back with the top selling offerings from USA. The highlights of this CD are actually the guest musicians, with some great sax and violin playing, but the songwriting isn't bad: some quite inventive and at times amusing lyrics, covering various aspects of faith and the Christian life. "Whole Armour Of God" and "Prodigal Son" are highlights. But unfortunately the least satisfying aspect of the CD is the singing. Andy can just about pull it off with the more bluesy, rocky numbers, but his voice is not really strong enough to keep the quieter, more exposed songs interesting. It's always good to try and support grassroots artists such as Andy Gilbert, but this CD will have limited appeal.
