Reviewed by Dave Brassington This new DVD includes a variety of artists such as Mark Lowry, Sue Dodge, Donnie Sumner, Cynthia Clawson and the black gospel pioneer Andrae Crouch plus a whole host of other artists singing a compilation of well known and well loved hymns, though more well known in America than in Britain. The DVD begins with "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" and continues on with "The Lily Of The Valley", the title track, "Abide With Me", etc. The recording takes place on a round stage which for me, smacks too much of exhibitionism. A prize-winning barbershop group, Acoustix, unfortunately give us "God Bless America" which, while technically brilliant, will grate with those who wince at the American Church's fusion of faith and jingoism. Randy Owen from the hitmaking country group Alabama has a moving interview with Bill Gaither and then sings his great song "One Big Heaven" which for me illustrates how much more realistic country music is, coming after the showmanship of the previously mentioned group! The well known gospel teacher Joni Lamb performs "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" which is a fantastic and most under recorded gospel song. Altogether a fairly enjoyable DVD apart from its OTT moments.
