Public money is being used to supply under-age children with condoms, it emerged this week. The NHS is promoting the 'C-Card' which children as young as 13 can use to claim free condoms without the knowledge of their parents but does not mention that the law forbids sex involving those under 16. The scheme is intended to prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases but research suggests that similar initiatives have not had this effect.

In the five years following the economic crisis, those under 30 saw their incomes reduce (twice as much as older people). The research also showed that employment among the under 30’s fell by 4 percentage points, but was unchanged among the over 30’s and that one in four 22-30 year olds depends on their parents for somewhere to live.

A poll for the National Children’s Bureau has suggested that young people’s attitude towards traditional teenage vices are more restrained than previous generations. More people (42%) thought that the legal age for buying cigarettes should be raised (it is currently 18) than thought it should be lowered (10%) Similarly, 37% would raise the age for gambling (only 9% would lower it) and 21% would raise the age for gambling (only 9% would lower it) and 21% would raise the age at which you can buy alcohol (7% would reduce it). Young people also believed that 16 was too young to join the army and would raise the minimum age to get married. Yet while 39% agreed with Ed Milliband that the voting age should be lowered to 16, only 13% said they would be certain to vote in a general election when given the chance.

The charity spoke to 1,000 13 to 24 year olds and a third of them said they found it difficult to speak to doctors. The main reason given among those who found it difficult was embarrassment, while a difficulty expressing themselves or the concern that doctors would think they were stupid were also a major concern.

With startling statistics such as one in 12 young people self-harming, 850,000 children and young people having a clinically diagnosed mental illness and 95% of imprisoned young people having a mental health disorder, it’s plain to see that we have something of a health crisis on our hands. In the UK we spend just £40 million per year on mental health services. This might sound like a decent amount until you compare it to a spend of £671 million on sexual health initiatives and £108 million on tackling obesity.
