Is religion the main cause of war as some critics claim? Not according to research by Bradford University: Only 10% of all wars in the 20th and 21st century have had a clear religious motivation. Even Arab-Israeli wars were judged to be primarily nationalistic, not religious. The report states that in the 20th century, ‘atheistic totalitarian states (Stalin’s Russia and Mao’s China) have perpetrated more mass murder than any state dominated by a religious faith. The report noted the positive role of religion in pressing for non-violent resolution of conflicts and that ‘very few, if any, wars in the past 100 years have been purely religiously motivated wars’.

Single Christians say according to a survey of 3000 Christians, 94% of whom were single: 54% hadn’t been on a date in the last year and only 5% date often. 57% would only marry a Christian; 42% might marry a non-Christian rather than stay single. 51% believe that sex belongs only in marriage and are fine with this; 27% believe this but find it hard to accept and live by. 14% thought it was ok to have sex before marriage, providing it took place within a loving, committed relationship.

A study undertaken in 2011 found that, in a typical month, 78% of newspaper articles were written by men, 72% of Question Time contributors were men and 84% of reporters and guests on Radio 4’s Today show were men. This year, beauty brand Dove repeated the self-esteem survey it ran 10 years ago. It found that: 69% of women don’t think they are beautiful, 41% of UK women are unhappy with their weight and body shape, compared with 36% in 2004. 1 in 5 (23%) of UK women have considered cosmetic surgery and 28% may consider it in the future. 50% of British women under 40 say social media has made them more self-conscious about their appearance.

The unrestricted use of fossil fuels should be phased out by 2100 if the world is to avoid dangerous climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on climate change says in a stark report that most of the world’s electricity can – and must – be produced from low carbon sources by 2050. If not, the world faces ‘severe, pervasive and irreversible’ damage. The UN said inaction would cost ‘much more’ than taking the necessary action.

Smoking in cars carrying children is set to be banned by the Government. Plans put before Parliament propose a fine of £50 to anyone who smokes in a car carrying an under 18 in England. The proposals will be voted on before the next General Election and could come into force in October.

Target times for ambulances to reach some seriously ill patients could be lengthened. A NHS document leaked to the BBC includes plans to change the response time for those patients – with ‘serious but not the most life threatening’ conditions – from eight to 19 minutes in England. It said the plans had been backed by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, subject to approval by ambulance trust bosses.
