There are many concerns about cannabis and the harm it can cause. One of the most obvious is its carcinogenic properties, whcih are four times greater than those of cigarettes. Prolonged cannabis use can lead to cancers of the lungs, head and neck, particularly as the smoke is often inhaled for longer than normal cigarette smoke. Recent years have also produced a growing body of evidence linking cannabis use to an increase in psychosis and schizophrenia.

A human rights group in Pakistan said that at least 461 women had died at the hands of family members in so-called "honour killings" in 2002, about 25% more than the pervious year. In such killings, women are murdered to protect the family honour for offences such as having sex outside marriage, dating, talking to men, being raped or even cooking poorly. The 2002 figure is up from about 370 honour killings in 2001.
