Yemen is suffering the worst cholera epidemic in the world, with more than 200,000 cases of the disease affecting every region of the war-torn country, the UN has warned. It has blamed the outbreak on two years of civil war in the country, which has destroyed water and sanitation systems, allowing the disease to spread rapidly (News, 7 April). More than 14.5 million people in the country do not have access to clean water. A joint statement from UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) at the weekend said that more than 1300 people had died so far from the disease, a quarter of them children. The death toll is expected to rise further.

A video exposing the atrocities committed by US abortion giant Planned Parenthood has been removed from YouTube after a judge, in May, granted an injunction to prevent the release of the footage. In the video, abortionists can be heard laughing about ‘the heads that get stuck’ during abortions and harvesting the brains of children. The filmmakers have been ordered to appear in court.

A Bill protecting the rights of Christian adoption agencies in Alabama was signed into law in late May. The Bill states that adoption agencies that do not receive federal funding cannot lose their license for adhering to faith-based policies. It was criticised by homosexual rights campaigners who said it discriminates against and stigmatises gay couples, but it was noted that secular agencies, who handle the majority of adoptions, still allow gay adoptions to take place.

On 12 May, a Christian printer who declined to make shirts for a gay pride event won a court case against his refusal to print them. Blain Adamson said he’d be happy to serve LGBT individuals as long as the shirts they ordered didn’t directly promote their sexuality, saying the message conflicted with his ‘sincerely held religious beliefs’. The lesbian owners of another T – Shirt Company said: ‘no one should be forced to do something against what they believe in’.

Ministers in Sweden’s state church cannot “refuse to marry same-sex couples”, the country’s Prime Minister has said. Stefan Löfven announced that church leaders should be required to marry same-sex couples – even if they disagree with homosexual marriage.

Hundreds of vulnerable patients are being killed in the Netherlands without giving clear consent, it has been revealed. ‘Strict protective guidelines’ supposed to protect vulnerable and elderly patients from being killed against their will are being flouted, leading to the deaths of 431 people in 2015, none of whom gave clear consent.

German MPs have voted to redefine marriage as "entered into for life by two people of different or the same sex". The bill passed by 393 to 226 after Chancellor Angela Merkel, who herself believes marriage is between a man and a woman, allowed a free vote on the issue.

A doctor has spoken out after two separate insurance companies refused to pay for life-saving treatments for his patients but did offer to pay to end their lives. Dr Brian Callister, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Nevada, shared how companies in neighbouring California and Oregon refused to help transfer and treat two of his patients who could not receive the necessary care in his hospital.
