A YouGov survey, commissioned by The Folio Society, saw the Bible named as the most valuable book to humanity. People were asked to name the books of most significance for the modern world. The Bible got 37 per cent of the vote, while Darwin’s On the Origins of Species, was chosen by 35 per cent. The Bible was cited because it ‘contains principles/guidelines on how to be a good’ and On the Origin of Species was chosen because it ‘answers fundamental questions of human existence’.

More than a quarter of Anglican clergy would support loosening ties between church and state or severing them, according to a YouGov poll for the Religion and Society Programme at Lancaster University. The poll also found that that just over half of Anglican clergy believe Christians in Britain are suffering discrimination through the application of equality laws.

A poll by the Huffington Post UK found that more than 60 per cent of 'non-religious' people said they thought religion caused more problems than it solved. Less than 25 per cent believe faith is a force for good. Even 20 per cent of British people, who described themselves as being 'very religious', said religion was harmful to society, and a quarter said atheists were more likely to be moral individuals than religious people.

The decision by the U.S. Navy, to remove Bibles from its Navy rooms, has been reversed. Navy Exchange Service Command officials had previously said they would be removing all religious literature, following complaints from an atheist group.

Travelodge to remove Bibles from its rooms. The 500-strong hotel chain has decided to remove all of the Bibles from its hotel rooms because, they say, having a Christian book does not reflect Britain's ‘multicultural society’. Some Bibles will now be held behind reception desks for customers wishing to read it.

In the just released results of the Evangelical Alliance survey Are we good neighbours? it revealed that evangelical Christians were largely good neighbours – by helping people in need, buying ethically-produced goods, sponsoring children in less developed countries and regularly praying for those in need at home and abroad.

Closer to home, in their neighbourhoods, more than four in 10 people trusted their next-door neighbour enough to leave a spare key with them or ask them to look after their property while away.

In the just released results of the Evangelical Alliance survey Are we good neighbours? on the question of the United Kingdom quitting the EU, 34 per cent wanted to see the back of Brussels while 46 per cent wanted it to stay; and 20 per cent were undecided. A whopping 91 per cent of them said they would normally vote in local elections – nearly triple the average national turn-out.

Vicars will be able to “dress down” for services under new proposals backed by the Church of England. Robes or vestments could be swapped for more informal wear under plans passed by the General Synod meeting at York University. The Rev Christopher Hobbs, from the London Diocese, who proposed the changes, said being willing to adapt and change was one of the “key factors” for growth in the Church of England.

Prime Minister David Cameron’s assertion that Britain is a ‘Christian country’ sparked controversy, with claims from secularists that the statement was divisive and untrue. His comments drew fire from secularists, with a letter to The Daily Telegraph signed by 50 public figures headed by the president of the British Humanist Association, Professor Jim Al-Khalili saying: ‘We object to his characterisation of Britain as a “Christian country” and the negative consequences for politics and society that this engenders.’ It continued: ‘Apart from in the narrow constitutional sense that we continue to have an established Church, Britain is not a “Christian country”. Constantly to claim otherwise fosters alienation and division in our society.’
