Bright pupils educated in England’s most deprived schools do worse in their GCSEs, education experts said today. A study by the Sutton Trust, an educational charity, found these students face a ‘double penalty’ – they achieve half a grade less for each GCSE they take and are entered for fewer exams. The researchers examined the results of 550,000 pupils who took GCSEs in England in 2006.

Taxpayers in Stoke-on-Trent pay almost the lowest average income tax of all the top 100 UK towns and cities, according to new research. City residents paid an average of £2,450 per taxpayer in the last tax year – just over half the average income tax contribution of £4,333. It leaves the city at no. 98 in the chart. The higheast average income tax is paid by people of St. Albans at £10,500 last year. Stoke-on-Trent taxpayers earn an average of £17,800 while the UK averasge income is £24,292. The figures are based on statistics provided to accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young by HM Revenue and Customs.

A cat was back with his owner after going missing for three-and-a-half years, the RSPCA said. Kofi vanished from his home in Nottingham during the autumn of 2005. An RSPCA Inspector was called after a cat was found injured in Ipswich on April 6. A scan on a microchip fitted to the cat revealed Kofi’s identity.

ID cards could be fitted with chip and pin technology to help combat identity fraud, it was revealed today. The head of the government agency tasked with producing the cards said there were no "technical obstacles" to adding chips to the cards and handing out pin numbers. Adding chips might allow the cards to be used in ATM machines in the future.

A majority of voters believe MP’s are abusing their expense claims, according to a Populus survey. The findings follow a string of new revelations that members of the government have become embroiled in controversy over their expenses.

House prices may have less than 10 percent left in fall before the bottom of the market is reached, economists predicted today. The Centre for Economics and Business Research said property transactions were likely to begin to rise over the coming months. The number of mortgages approved for house purchase jumped by nearly 20 percent to £7,000 during February.

Of the 17,000 households affected in Hull, Doncaster and East Riding almost two years ago, more than 350 are still living in temporary accommodation, or on the top floors of there home.

President Barack Obama last night declared the US lost its "moral bearings" with gruesome interrogations of suspected terrorists, leaving the way open for possible prosecution of those who authorised them. Mr Obama has said he does not want prosecutions of CIA agents and interrogators who took part in water boarding and other harsh methods, as long as they acted within the advice from superiors that such practices were legal.

The UK’s recovery from recession is still a year away and will be ‘’slow and fragile’’ the CBI business group warned today. The slowdown should ease in the second half of this year but only return to growth in spring 2010, it said. The Ernst of young ITEM club, which bases its forecasts on the Treasury's own economic model, also predicted a spring 2010 recovery but a tough road ahead as unemployment soars past three million.

As many as 22 percent have had to abandon trips this year because of work pressures - two percent up on the total in 2008, a survey by travel company expedia found. The Tory frontbencher arrested over home office leaks was told by the police he faced life imprisonment. Tory immigration spokesman Damian Green, who found out yesterday he will not face criminal charges over the leaks , said arresting officers told him at the time ‘’ Do you realise that this offence could lead to life imprisonment?’’ The MP said he thought the assertion was ‘absurd’.
