Gary Lineker is supporting a project to stage a football world cup for street children. The former England striker spoke at the launch of the Street Child World Cup, which is being organised by a network of groups led by the Christian-based human rights charity Amos Trust. ‘It is great that the Street Child World Cup will use this game, which is loved all over the world, to help give kids a fairer deal,’ Gary said. Teams, formed by organisations working with street children and representing eight countries across Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe, will compete in the tournament, which will take place in South Africa in March 2010, before the Fifa World Cup. The final will be held to coincide with the arrival in the country of international dignitaries, policymakers and leading football figures.

National Lottery grants for sport, arts and heritage projects have more than halved while administration costs have soared, according to new figures. Grants to the three key areas peaked in 1997-8 but fell by more than 50 per cent in the decade which followed. In the same period, administration costs have more than doubled.

Care for people with learning disabilities came under fire today in a report that found a litany of “significant and distressing failures” across the NHS and councils. One man died as a result of failings in his care and it is likely that a second man’s death could have been avoided, the Health Service and Local Government Omsbudmen ruled. Patients with learning difficulties were treated less favourably than others.

Figures are today set to reveal the measure of inflation used in wage negotiations turned negative for the first time since 1960 last month. Economists are predicting that Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation – key for private sector wage deals and pension payments – will have plunged from 0.1 per cent in January to –0.7 per cent in February. This is the first negative reading since March 1960.

The majority of secondary schools will not meet a Government deadline to provide meals of a certain nutritional standard, caterers warned today. The Local Authority Caterers Association said a survey of members showed that just under a fifth of secondaries (16.2 per cent) will fail to meet the September 1 deadline, while around half (48.6 per cent) will only partly meet it. The standards are simply too strict, the association warned.

Public trust in social services has been dented by the Baby P tragedy, according to a poll published today. Some 42 per cent of people said their opinion of children’s social workers had got worse since the case, the survey for the Local Government Association found. Only 54 per cent agreed that social services were generally effective at protecting children and 43 per cent said they would not recommend a career as a social worker to a friend or relative.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s today said hard-pressed shoppers looking for cheaper deals had helped it post healthy fourth-quarter sales. Its ‘Switch and Save’ campaign in January had driven a 60 per cent year-on-year rise in sales of its cheaper ‘basics’ range, the firm said. Excluding fuel, the Supermarket giant reported an overall 6.2 per cent rise in like-for-like sales over the 11 weeks leading up to March 21.

A church leader has blasted the British National Party for promoting “division, fear and hatred” and is now urging voters to reject the far-right group in upcoming elections. The Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, Bishop of Manchester, spoke out against the BNP during a speech to Manchester City Council. He said the party has “a racial analysis at the core of its philosophy” that was incompatible with British democracy.

Council taxpayers in England are facing a 3.5 per cent rise in their bills this spring as the recession hits town hall revenues, the local Government Association (LGA) warned today. The LGA said that the projected increase would be the lowest for more than a decade, despite the pressure on council budgets. The increase is below the Government’s preferred CPI rate of inflation, which is currently running at 4.1 per cent.

Unemployment will soar to 3.4 million as the financial crisis deepens, experts predicted today. The official unemployment total reached a 10-year high of 1.86 million last October and some analysts expect the figure to increase to two million when new figures are published on Wednesday. Independent forecasting group, Ernst & Young ITEM Club, has predicted the figure will pass 3.25 million by the end of 2010, hitting 3.4 million in 2011.

Cancer patients in England can now apply for free prescriptions. Charges for cancer patients will be scrapped from April 1st but patients can apply from now on. Today’s announcement means the abolition of charges for everyone under-going treatment for cancer, the effects of cancer or the effects of cancer treatment.

British Gas today said it was cutting the price of its standard tariff by 10 per cent. The energy supplier said the reduction would come into force on February 19 and would affect 7.5 million homes. It estimates the cut will save customers £79 on the average annual gas bill.

A call to double the number of people on the organ donor register to 16 million has been achieved a year early, figures out today show. More than one in four (26 per cent) people in the UK have now pledged to donate their organs after death, according to NHS Blood and Transport (NHSBT). In 2001, former Health` Secretary Alan Milburn urged people to sign up to double the number from eight million then to 16 million by 2010.

Frequent use of cannabis may be linked to testicular cancer, according to a report today. The U.S. study showed that being a marijuana smoker at the time of diagnosis was associated with a 70 per cent increased risk. It was particularly elevated for those who used the drug at least once a week and/or who had long term exposure to the substance beginning in adolescence.
