After bemoaning the fact that Vineyard songs can be light on doctrine, along comes their latest tape- with no less than the Apostle's Creed set to music! (And the song "We Believe" is guaranteed to raise the spirits.) Worship leader Dan Wilt has a great set of songs on side one: from the opening "Who Will Ascend", based on Psalm 24, to the title track "I Will Lift My Hands". The songs are spotlessly performed and have a prominent electric guitar driven sound which enhances, rather than hinders, the worship and is excellently played. One drawback is the enthusiasm of the worshippers- who whoop and yell, even after the poignant ballads! Side two is disappointing, although there are two excellent new songs from David Ruis- with his raw, rocky sound over inventive lyrics: "If I'm healed by just one touch of your garment Lord/Then how much more of your love is for me than I'm tasting, Lord?" The other songs are very poor, however, with the celebratory jig-feel simply making me cringe. So, rather a good Vineyard album which could have been better with more David Ruis material.
